ECDL study shows: Swiss population overestimates own PC skills

Our representative study demonstrates that the Swiss population has inadequate basic computer user skills. In a practical test they scored an average of 46.1%. In addition 78% of the participants overestimated their own PC skills. People with a low score made the most unrealistic self-assessments. Younger participants, people in clerical jobs and people with an ICT-certificate had comparatively better results and more realistic self-assessments. You can find the detailed results of the study, a breakdown by demographic group, the press release and a link to take the study test yourself under www.ecdl.ch/survey

Employers and schooling institutions need to take action

With these study results we would like to focus the attention of the public and employers on the poor results of the Swiss population in basic PC use, as well as sensitise them to the massive overestimation of people’s PC skills and encourage them to take action. The study results confirm the current relevance of ICT user certificates: Contrary to a self-assessment they offer reliable verification of existing PC skills. At the ECDL Information Day in Rorschach on the 9th of September we presented the study results and discussed them with ICT-training experts.
